The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded an impressive revenue generation of N575,505,612,804.59 in the first half of 2024, from January to June. This represents a remarkable 221.13% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2023 when the command generated N260,256,942,120.69 billion.
Comptroller Dera Nnadi, the Customs Area Controller of the Tin Can Island Command, announced this outstanding achievement during a press briefing held at the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) Secretariat in Lagos. Nnadi highlighted that this success aligns with the Nigeria Customs Service’s core functions of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement/anti-smuggling activities.
In terms of exports, the total value of commercial goods exported through the Tin Can Island Ports in the first half of 2024 is N1,032,601,044,744.00, with a total volume of 489,594.50 Metric Tons (MT). This is a significant increase compared to the export value of N182,333,764,943.00 in the first half of 2023, which had a total volume of 291,436.00 Metric Tons (MT). Soybeans were the highest export commodity, valued at N92,059,078,980.00, while self-adhesive was the lowest, valued at N17,560,865.00.

Comptroller Nnadi also highlighted the Command’s successful anti-smuggling operations during this period. The enforcement and anti-smuggling unit effectively conducted physical examinations in collaboration with critical stakeholders to ensure compliance with international trade regulations. The command seized illicit substances such as 1,072kg of Cannabis Indica, with a street value of N3,216,000,000.00.
The total Duty Paid Value of all the seizures amounts to N8.9 billion. Nnadi acknowledged the significance of these seizures in preventing the inflow of illicit drugs, arms, and ammunition into the country. He expressed appreciation for the support and partnership of shipping companies, terminal operators, and other stakeholders in achieving these results.
Comptroller Nnadi commended his management team, officers, and men of the Command for their dedication and urged them to continue supporting the administration’s efforts to achieve even greater heights. The impressive revenue generation and successful anti-smuggling operations reflect the commitment and effectiveness of the Tin Can Island Port Command in fulfilling its responsibilities and contributing to the nation’s security and socio-economic well-being.
