“Our Primary Duty Is to Deter Smuggling” – Deputy Comptroller Shuaibu

The Team Coordinator of the Comptroller-General’s Strike Force Team ‘A’, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Deputy Comptroller Shuaibu, held his first media briefing for the year 2021, today Wednesday, 10th February 2021.
At the press briefing, Shuaibu giving a brief account of his team’s stewardship between 1st of January to date, reiterated his resolve to continue to lead his team to firmly adhere to their primary mandate which is to serve as a major deterrent to smuggling in the area designated as ‘Area A’ by the Nigeria Customs Service, which essentially covers all area Commands in Lagos, Oyo/Osun, and Ondo/Ekiti States respectively. Shuaibu said that in its quest to judiciously play its designated role in the enforcement of the federal government’s fiscal policies, the team made the following seizures:
i. 1,930 bags of foreign rice (50kg each)
ii. 552 cartons of foreign foot wears
iii. 1,227 rolls chiffon textile materials
iv. 18 pallets of perfumes, cosmetics and bags
v. 2,064 cartons of electricity bulbs
vi. 1,810 cartons of alcoholic and non-alcoholic wine

The cumulative Duty Payable Value (DPV) of all the items above are N278,789,299.00.
In addition to these seizures, Deputy Comptroller Shuaibu said that they were also able to recover the sum of N429, 123,502.00 for government during the period under review due to the meticulous documentary checks been carried out by Information Communication Technology (ICT) Unit of the team.
In conclusion, and as it has now become customary with him, Shuaibu thanked compliant traders whom he described as patriotic citizens for complying with the Customs extant regulations and laws. He then called on the non-compliant traders amongst importers and exporters to please become compliant so that together we all can build an economically formidable Nigeria.
